This exhibition highlights “Noto roof tiles” rescued from buildings damaged in the Noto Peninsula Earthquake, examining their history and the relationship with the local community. The venue—Kaihama Amidayu, a public bath that was reopened early for residents after the disaster—serves as the local hub. Six artists present new works that reflect the current state of both the tiles and the region; I have created a drawing on a single roof tile.

“Monochrome – Corridor of Memories”
Noto roof tile, acrylic paint
2025
This work responds to my installation Corridor of Memories, which collapsed during the Noto Peninsula Earthquake. The patterns I once painted in the old Kodomari Nursery imagined “paths that lead to cherished memories.” With that same idea of connection ahead, I have now drawn on black roof tiles that once sheltered the homes of Noto.
Roof tiles have quietly recorded the lives of people, protecting their homes from wind and rain over many years. Drawing white lines on their black surfaces is like finding light in darkness—it is an act of tracing lost time and reconnecting memories anew. While recalling the laughter once heard inside the houses and the gazes of families watching over one another, I drew each line with care.
This “monochrome” world, floating between black and white, will gradually take on colour through the eyes and thoughts of those who view it. Through the efforts of the Kawara Bank, I hope this work becomes a gentle spark for the revival of Noto and for the colours hidden deep within people’s hearts.
